Brighton Breezy: pun, fun and cycle in the sun

Now Mother Nature has ditched her winter coats and is flaunting her summer dresses again, what better way to enjoy the season than combining outdoor urges with a good cause?
Picture
Albion in the Community is the official charity of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, and they have been a long-standing associate of the Meet 19 Network. Similar to our goals, they aim to inspire people to participate in activities and to raise aspirations, albeit in a sports environment rather than on a business level. Besides that, the AITC inspires us with similar values we hold dear with our associates: commitment, respect, quality and teamwork.

Therefore we are proud to support their latest fundraising event, the Brighton Breezy. Participating in this cycling challenge is an energetic way to support AITC in their goal to engage and inspire local people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds - giving them opportunities they may never have had.

Participants can pick either of three distances for the challenge:
40km (the "gentle breeze")
75km (the "cool breeze") or
110 km (the "fresh breeze), according to your level of confidence and condition.
More detailed information is available on the AITC website. You may also send an email to fundraising@albioninthecommunity.org.uk or give them a call at 01273 878246.

Brighton and Hove Albion Promotion Parade Announced

Picture
The victory parade has been announced for Brighton and Hove Albion's success in reaching the Premiership on the fourth attempt.
Amazing news, since it's the first time they've been in the top tier since 1979 in a 35-year rollercoaster of an era that has seen Albion homeless and pitted against numerous survival challenges on and off the pitch.

The promotion is set to earn the club around £100million in revenues and generate vital tourism and hospitality income for the city. To cheer on and give the team and staff some well-deserved applause the procession starts at 5pm by Palace Pier on Sunday 14th May and ends on Hove Lawns around 6.30pm. For more details here's the link.

For the amazing business success story of the Albion, the AMEX and the AITC read our story here.

April 26th event marks M19's first birthday

Our thanks go to all the great people that attended our M19 April 26th event and making it so rewarding
Picture
Another busy one we kicked off a poignant and to the point talk from Jim Cunliffe who shared his experiences working with Young Enterprise. If you'd like to find out more or want to get involved get in touch with us here and we'll forward on your information requests: Jim's brilliant at getting back to people.

Thanks for ignoring the technical difficulties, and we got there in the end – with sound FX provided in the flesh by Mr Flache. And wow, we got a lovely testimonial: "
The event is great and I really enjoyed it; you and Tilo can be really proud of yourselves for putting it together so well."

People keep saying this and it's actually starting to sink in. It's hard to believe we've started planning this exactly a year ago and April was our first birthday. We need to celebrate! Without sounding gushing we'd like to say thank you back, as you're the people that make the network what it is: so just to say, plans are afoot for a special Summer event. But in the meantime, hopefully see you at the next one on Wednesday May 31st.

Get quizzing for Albion in the Community

Picture
AITC has a reputation for organising a inclusive activities all through the year and their quiz nights are no exception.
Thursday 27th April (6.30-7pm, at the AMEX stadium Heineken Lounge) sees yet another of their glorious quiz nights: you'd think it's a seated and quiet affair, but make no mistake, those quizzes are competitive.

And it's a no-brainer, really, if you pardon the pun, for not only do you get to enjoy a fun evening out with your mates at the Amex Stadium, but the food (it's a curry buffet) is included in the price.

Ready for the The "Green Oomph"?

When Jules Siedenburg spoke at the March Meet 19 he revealed the remarkable idea of adding edible algae or 'green oomph' to our shopping lists and into our daily meals. But how to market this? How to monetise it? How to make it a workable substance to benefit all mankind? Click below to find out how you can join in and help by adding your suggestions to Jules' potentially groundbreaking project
Picture
Algae? Yes, algae.

When we think 'algae' rarely does the idea of eating it come to mind straight away. Usually it's all about 'yucky stuff growing everywhere' or 'can you even eat that?" The answer is 'yes' and 'yes'. The tricky thing is that there is algae (the yucky kind), but then there is also also edible algae (the edible, useful kind), and it's proven very difficult to make people understand the difference.

Jules made that distinction abundantly clear in his explanations, and once he had the attention of the group, he talked about the huge advantages (it grows easily in controlled environments, is self-sustaining, is able to supplement poor diets, is healthy, can create local work, etc.) and the support of a number of international organisations, including the United Nations.

Obstacles to market and social enterprise
However, he also spoke of the constraints that would need to be overcome: local preferences, poor reception due to preconceptions (the 'yuck' factor, especially), financial and logistical limitations, the varied approaches necessary to address different audiences (particularly with regard to the global North and the global South).

When he had finished his talk we launched into a surprisingly long Q&A session, as the audience was so thrilled by the subject that nearly everyone had something to contribute to the discussion. So much so that - at some point - we had to end the Q&A to move forward with our programme. So, to colour in a few more details, we have asked Jules to write a short follow-up document highlight the project.

Since there was such a lot of interest in the subject matter, and many ideas were floating around the room, Jules has added a couple of questions into the document to ask you, our community, for help to move the project along.
If you would like to get involved in the discussions highlighted in the attached document, please go ahead and get in touch with Jules directly by clicking on the button below.

It would be really helpful to our friend Jules if you were to take him up on his request and read the note. And if you have any ideas or comments, why not give him a leg up with your feedback?

Thanks to all who made March a prosperous event

Picture
Picture
A big thanks to all those Meet19ers who attended our March event. Our April event booking link is now up
We had new arrows, we had a new horn, we had new M19 associates. We had one of our best talks yet with social entrepreneur Jules Siedenburg, who used the gathering almost like a forum for how to monetise his amazing findings. With a great mix of friends and new members we managed to get some freeform networking in before it started (many arrived early) and long after our set finish time: a good sign we feel.

Found out that there were a couple of interesting ways associates are making things work: two arrived for a meeting before the session, another pair talked about creating a list of add-on services they could sell using each other (seeing as their services seemed to overlap), and several M19ers were learning how others created revenue streams and how that could work for their business. Inspiring stuff.

It's also interesting how the Speed Meet messes with people's heads, but that's why we love it and what makes it fun. We also well understand that some are preoccupied with what they are going to pitch or adjusting to speaking to everyone present (a manageable fifteen guaranteed contacts at my count), rather than just a handful of potential leads. There is definitely a volume of conversation and a certain degree of excitement in the air. I'll be sure to write an article about it so associates can have a definitive guide as to how to get the most out of it, it's a been a while coming.

In the meantime tickets are already up for the next event on this our blogsite and also our static parallax site over at www.meet.uk where we have more event protocols. We seem to be 'happening' every last Wednesday now and our next one, unsurprisingly, is on Wednesday 26th April. Looks like we already have a guest speaker in place, a Meet19er and established prolific networker who is coming in to discuss their work with young enterprise.

Presenting our guest speaker for Wednesday 29th March

We are proud to announce our guest speaker for the next Meet 19 event Wednesday 29th March: social entrepreneur Jules Siedenburg
Picture
Jules has many years of experience in the field of international development as both a practitioner and researcher, and has focused on agriculture, climate change and Africa. He has worked for diverse donors and NGOs (e.g., the UK Department for International Development, CARE), and is also a research fellow at the University of East Anglia.

For all the merit of conventional development interventions, they don’t always deliver the intended results. Jules has therefore been searching for neglected opportunities with promise for poor communities in Africa. Edible algae is one particularly exciting opportunity, and could be called an x-factor technology in light of its huge potential.

His start-up idea involves leveraging this technology as a way to help poor communities in the global South. His proposed business model would address the major obstacles to both its production and consumption within the target communities, and would set the stage for wider scale-up in the global South.
